چکیده

Presupposition is a pervasive feature of human language. It involves many interesting interactions between the utterances of a discourse and the context of the discourse. In this paper we focus on issues of logical form connected with the interaction of presupposition and discourse context, and illustrate our theory with some implementational work using the active logic framework. After reviewing some of the major issues in presuppositiontheory we turn to a largely successful uniied approach of Heim. We show how the main principles of this theory can be implemented in active logic. But we also nd two serious diiculties. These consist in (a) a straightforward counterexample and (b) a type of discourse that we call a garden-path discourse. We maintain that both the counterexample and the garden-path type of discourse can be handled by our active-logic version of Heim's theory. This requires us to reformulate and extend Heim's Although this work is largely theoretical, both Heim's theory and ours have important things to say about the incremental processing of the utterances that make up discourse. And we present our theory as a speciication of a processing device that takes logical form of a sentence along with current discourse context as input and delivers an updated discourse context as output. As an experiment, we have implemented portions of this device.

A Uniform Treatment of Pragmatic Inferences in Simple and Complex Utterances and Sequences of Utterances

Drawing appropriate defeasible inferences has been proven to be one of the most pervasive puzzles of natural language processing and a recurrent problem in pragmatics. This paper provides a theoretical framework, called stratified logic, that can accommodate defeasible pragmatic inferences. The framework yields an algorithm that computes the conversational, conventional, scalar, clausal, and no...

Reasoning without Believing { on the Mechanization of Presuppositions and Partiality Reasoning without Believing: on the Mechanization of Presuppositions and Partiality

It is well-known that many relevant aspects of everyday reasoning based on natural language cannot be adequately expressed in classical rst-order logic. In this paper we address two of the problems, rstly that of so-called presuppositions, expressions from which it is possible to draw implicit conclusion, which classical logic normally does not warrant, and secondly the related problem of parti...

The Role of Fakr Razi’s Theological Presuppositions his Interpretation of the verses about Determinism and Free Will

Abstract: According to the prophetic traditions Interpreting Qur’anic verses based on personal opinions is one of the important points that should be avoided. One of its examples is involving personal theological opinions and principles -which are merely unrevised personal inferences- in interpretation of Quran. Fakhr Razi, according to the Ash'arites, has a deterministic view.  This is quite ...
